7mm-08 Ackley Improved

In my weekly study of internal and external ballistics, the 7mm-08 A.I. caught my attention some 20 months ago. I read, I called, I sent texts digging up as much information as I could find. When all was said and done, it looked as though it would be what I hoped it would be. And that is a very high performance short action on the common .470” bolt face, shared by the .308 Win, .243 Win, 6.5 Creedmoor ect. By performance, I am meaning lack of wind drift and energy on target (read flesh). I don’t even look at vertical trajectory. Correcting for it means dialing a turret farther, or holding farther down on a reticle. How much BC can we push at what muzzle velocity? Well, I’ve got thousands of rounds experience behind the standard 7mm-08, and I am a huge fan of it! But, can we make it stronger, faster, better? The most performance I’ve achieved out of a 7mm-08 is with a 1:9 twist rate, on a 24” barrel. Loaded with a 162 gr bullet, it can produce 2700 fps MV, maybe a tad more. So what can a 7mm-08 A.I. do? How well does the A.I. chamber shoot while fire forming brass? Those were my questions. Keep in mind, the 7mm-08 A.I. is by all means a “hand-loader’s cartridge”. You can’t short cut your way to brass shape short of a hydraulic forming die (which I have no experience with). .280 A.I. brass is available on the market, 7mm-08 A.I. brass is not. So this cartridge has been on my brain for a long time. Then David called…

Desert Tech TRASOL Ballistic Calculator

TRASOL Ballistic Calculator

Desert Tech’s TRASOL is a new ballistic application that features an innovative Heads-Up display.  The Trajectory Solutions App accesses your phone’s camera to provide a heads-up display of target and app tools.  To my knowledge, this is the first ballistic app to provide this functionality.   By using the camera, you are able to capture still images or video of your shots!

Alliant BE-86 Load Data: 38 Super & 10mm

By: Cary Kieffer

About 2 months ago I asked my main man Smiddy at Johnson Sporting Goods in Adrian MI. for a good powder for high velocity pistol that was flash suppressed. He recommended trying Alliant’s relatively new BE-86, he said to think of it a lot like Power Pistol without all of the flash. Sounds perfect. I like Alliant’s Power Pistol, it is my go to powder for all of the cartridges I reload from 380acp all the way up to 460 Rowland, once I hit 44 magnum I switch to H110. BE-86 is a newer powder, so not a lot of data to go on out there, here is a few 38 Super and 10mm loads I’ve been working with and what happened.

Underwood Ammunition 460 Rowland Chronograph Results

By: Cary Kieffer

I got a neat new toy to play with, a Caldwell Ballistic Precision Premium Chronograph. Yesterday was the first time I ever played with it. I had a blast and learned a lot. Some of it I did not want to know, some was great but my precious Underwood 460 Rowland ammo came up short. A big thanks to Deputy Chris H, of the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Dept for hooking me up with this gizmo. Let’s see what happened.

Surplus 5.45x39mm: 7N6 – You Should Have Stocked Up

Introduction

For the purposes of this article we compared the commercial M855 loading for the 5.56mm to the 1980s Russian 7N6 5.45x39mm surplus round. Both rounds were evaluated out of 16 inch barrels, as that is the most common option to the civilian rifleman. Both the AR-15 carbine in 5.45 and commercial AK-74 variants use this lengh barrel. There are exceptions, such as civilian versions of the RPK-74 (23.2 inch barrel), 20-inch 5.45 barrels and even some 14.5 inch barrels. However, the vast majority are 16-inch, which is the length we will focus on.

SPR in 5.45x39mm

In previous articles, I’ve examined the cost benefit of shooting 7n6 surplus instead of commercial M855 5.56x45mm. In this follow-up article, we will examine the various characteristics of the 7N6 surplus round that lend themselves to Serious Social Purposes.

Dallas Reloads 300 Blackout Subsonic Ammo Review

Dallas Reloads 300 blackout subsonic

I did a recent project building up a 300 Blackout pistol.  I ran a 11″ Wilson Combat 1/8 twist barrel and needed some good ammo to test the platform with.  I was familiar with the work done by Chad at DallasReloads and gave him a ring..
