Project: 7mm08 lightweight hunting rifle, custom Savage.

This started 2 years ago… sitting in a blind, with lots of time to think.  Being a certified gun nut I am always itching for the next one.. I just really love putting together cool guns.  I am very much a dedicated use, specialty kind of guy.  I like ones that are purpose built for specific tasks.

Desert Tech Covert .308

Today we’re going to take a look at the Desert Tech Covert. The guys at DTA were kind enough to let me borrow a Covert in 308 for a little while.

Hunting with the LMT LM8MWS 308

LMT LM8MWS

Lewis Machine & Tool Company (LMT) is recognized for producing high quality rifles in demand by law enforcement and military.  The British Army and New Zealand Army have selected LMT weapon systems.  The LM8MWS is built around a Monolithic Rail Platform and the Modular Weapon System that allows the operator to easily change barrels and calibers.  My particular rifle is fitted with the standard .308 caliber chrome-lined 16″ barrel 1:10″ twist.  I look forward to adding a 6.5 Creedmoor down the road.  So how well does the LMT .308 perform as a hunting rifle?

An Elk Wildcat

6.5x284

So in conjunction with fellow staff writer, Jason Hallmark, we have finally started planning an elk hunt for next year.  While there are a lot of details that go into the planning of a hunt of this caliber, the biggest token piece is choice of firearm.  We both decided to build rifles on similar platforms, but in different calibers.

South Texas Arms STA-LR in .243 Win

Some time back I had a conversation with Brandon Sneed, owner of South Texas Arms, about a lightweight full frame AR purpose built for hunting. We both understand that there is only so light you can go, and we want premium components which sometimes bring some heft with them. In addition, we considered what calibers are available and decided against the standard .308 that is found in most full frame AR rifles. We both agree that .308 is great on medium game like deer and pigs but a bit much for a coyote gun.  We considered 6.5 Creedmoor, but a lack of variety and overall availability of factory ammunition had me looking for a new option.  I can’t remember who suggested .243 Winchester, but it was a clear choice with its huge popularity and variety of available factory ammunition.  .243 Winchester has been around since 1955 according to Wikipedia and was even designed around the idea of a dual purpose varmint and medium game cartridge.

Ruger American Ranch Compact rifle in 300 Blackout

Ruger American Ranch Compact 300 Blackout with Leupold VXR 2-7 and Templar Tactical Nemesis30

We got the Ruger American Ranch Compact in 300 Blackout back in the fall.  It was exactly what I was looking for.  A lightweight 300 Blackout youth model with a 16″ threaded barrel.   We got it, mounted a Leupold VXR 2-7 on it and sighted it in with some Barnes 110g ammo.  Running a Templar Tactical Nemesis30 can on it.  Right of the box it was shooting 1/2″ groups. Very nice.

We hunted with it and it took care of a few deer for my boys.  It’s a cool little gun, very lightweight and even dad might enjoy it as a truck gun our out walking around!

Savage Precision Carbine .308

Savage Precision Carbine

This article is part one of a long-term field test of the Savage Precision Carbine.  Now that it is legal to hunt whitetail deer in Texas with a suppressor, I was searching for a suitable host platform.  I quickly settled on the .308 cartridge because of the availability of factory threaded barrels in that caliber – usually offered as a “tactical” or “law enforcement” model – and the adaptability of that cartridge.  My criteria:  A short 18″ – 20″ barrel, detachable box magazine, decent factory stock out of the box, and a reputation for accuracy.  A great trigger is a must but I was willing to drop in a Timney or Jewell if needed.  The Savage Precision Carbine quickly became the obvious choice.

AAC Model 7 300 Blackout

The AAC Model 7 300 Blackout rifle is breaking my heart.  It reminds me of the hot new girl in town that everyone is after who turned out to be hard to live with.

The AAC Model is essentially a Remington Model 7 fitted with the AAC .30 caliber barrel.  It is a short, lightweight, cool little gun that I really want to like (a lot).  Specifications:

Weatherby Vanguard II 308 Suppressor Ready project

Weatherby Vanguard II 308 suppressor ready

After getting such great results from the Weatherby Vanguard II 7mm08 we tested earlier I thought to myself, “it would be great if I could run a can on this gun” .  I contacted Tim at Weatherby and suggested they should offer these rifles in a shorter, threaded barrel given how popular hunting with suppressors has become.  He was interested..

6.8 SPC II Custom Build Rifle

6.8 SPC

There have been countless wildcat cartridges over the years.  One recent trend has been the various efforts to modify the standard AR15 to shoot a heavier, more lethal bullet.  The crazy hype surrounding the 300 Blackout is but one example.  For my money, the 6.8 SPC is the best of the lot for general all-around use.

Hogs

Watch for Wild Hogs

Wild hog hunting is all the rage.

Outfitters are specializing in taking clients on hunts with night vision equipped rifles. There are hog eradication businesses with horses and packs of dogs. Heck, there are even reality television shows about hunting hogs.

For quantity of hogs taken, the pinnacle is aerial shooting.

Kyle Lange, of Lange Helicopters, has been shooting out of a helicopter since 1984. He started as a child helping with the family business.
