So a lady named Kelly Zhu from www.hisgadget.inc on Amazon.com  kindly sent this to me and asked for a review, no problem. So today we look at the OxyLed MD50 high performance light and will put it up against my favorite light the Streamlight 600 lumen ProTac.

oxyled 50Initial Impressions: When I opened the box I immediately disliked it, it just wasn’t my style. First, I don’t do rechargeables, I like regular batteries.

Second, it has the beam focus where you slide the head back and forth, I don’t like that either, I like my lights pre-focussed and thats it.

Third, it uses the 18650 battery. I like the CR-123’s, that’s what is available in our supply chain, and like I said before..no rechargeables.

I don’t mean to badmouth the OxyLed MD50 but that was my honest first thoughts. Not that there is anything wrong with it, just the features of this light didn’t suit my personal tastes and that’s all, since then things have changed quite a bit.

I guess I was expecting a “tactical” light. This isn’t it and never will be for me for the reasons stated. In no way shape or form would I ever use this light in combat should I ever return to it or in LEO duties here at home. That does not make it useless though. I paid tons of money for a large variety of Surefire and Streamlight tactical lights. This OxyLed MD50 is $20….so not the same ball park. For twenty bucks I think you are getting a great work or around the house, camp or hunting light.20150129_185935_resized

Specs: Let’s cover the techno stuff then move into what it is good for. The OxyLed MD50 light is 500 lumens, thats alot, and compared to my Streamlight 600 lumen I think they are right about that. It does not seem like the manufacturer over rated it. It’s bright and has good throw when tightly focused and an unbelievable amount of spill when used as an area light. The OxyLed MD50 is a five mode light, high-medium-low-strobe-SOS, and has a Cree bulb good for over 50000 hours. The light will run on the 18650 rechargeable it comes with or 3 AAA’s you put in a little plastic do-hickey inside. I like that, if it dies and you still need it, with 3AAA’s your back in business.

20150129_185950_resizedTorture test: I did bang it around some, let it sit in the sink with water running on it and stuck it outside in sub zero temps over night to see if I could kill it. PASS PASS PASS…seems pretty tough.

Uses: In spite of how I thought in the first 3 minutes the light has grown on me. It see’s at least a few minutes of use daily. Mostly shining the dogs in the big backyard so they  know to come in and the rest is me outside seeing what it would do. I have been using it for probably 3 weeks and I only charged it on day one. So the battery lasts on one charge really well I think.

20150129_190029_resizedThe best thing about this light is the flood. It is wide and it is bright! You could light up a whole camp site, game dressing area, barn…whatever you wanted if you just hang it up in the air a bit. It really does a great job of area lighting on flood. You could see to do most anything. I like that a lot.20150129_190011_resized

I’ll let the pictures tell most of the story: As you can see when it’s focused it lacks spill but the focus is really tight.20150129_190003_resized Compared to the Streamlight ProTac the OxyLed MD50 out performs it for overall distance it will shine and for the area it can light up but the Streamlight has a better “happy medium” if you know what I mean. The Streamlight costs 4 times as much though. All in all, the OxyLed MD50 is a solid performer and a bargain buy.20150129_190159_resized20150129_190148_resized

Summary: This is not a tactical light for me but it would make an excellent hunting, fishing, garage, around the house,  all around use flashlight. Hand one of these to each of your kids at the campground or wherever and they have a good light that if it gets lost…it’s $20. It won’t freeze up so a glove compartment light is another great use. I hate to say this but my Surefire 952 FAILED the same freeze test I gave the OxyLed MD50.

20150129_190215_resizedIt seems very well made and in some aspects the OxyLed MD50 plain beats up on my precious Streamlight costing four times as much. It comes complete with charger/battery and it is only $20. Did I say it was only $20??  That right there makes this one heck of a deal I think. It is a solid, good bright light without breaking the bank. If these sound like the kind of features you want then I do recommend giving the OxyLed MD50 a shot. You can find it here http://www.amazon.com/Flashlight-Emergency-Security-Adjustable-Brightness/dp/B00JE329YO . Thank you Kelly for giving me the opportunity to try it out and look on hisgadgets.com for all kinds of electronic items.

As always thanks for reading and train often.
