The reason I no longer take my larger bore rigs out of the safe unless I am shooting beyond 500-600 yards..

Hello everyone!

I’d like to introduce you to FrankenStoner, the main reason why I don’t take my larger bore weapons out of the safe… unless I’m shooting beyond 500-600 yards, that is. Personally, I think it’s silly when I see people with .308’s, .300wm, et al.. shooting on paper at 100-300 yards, unless they are doing load development, function testing, or in a match. Why spend the extra money when you can shoot more affordable and more comfortably  out to 600 yards and beyond with the good old AR15 platform?

You don’t have to spend very much money building one either… really; this is a Shaw 20” 1 in 8” twist stainless .223 bbl with a Clark Custom carbon fiber hand-guard, an unknown upper, and an eagle arms lower. It is fluted and has a low-profile gas block to controll the weight and a Miculek Comp to tame the recoil for my kids and for 3-gun w/a different optic.

I have, even shooting the cheap stuff, been able to hold sub .5moa groups out of this rig and with the 25x Millet LRS-1 scope, been able to engage steel targets out to 750 yards with relative ease.  The most common round for me to shoot out of this rifle is the Wolf poly 62 grn JHP . The trigger is my own filed/fitted tweak on a Mil-Spec trigger with a JP light-weight spring kit and some lightening to the hammer. It’s not as good as a name brand trigger, but much better than milspec and hasnt let me down yet.

Here’s a break-down of what it cost to build, some are estimates as I am going by a 40 year old’s memory from a build nearly 3.5 years ago.

  1.  Eagle Arms lower:     $95
  2.  Lower parts kit:          $50
  3.  Gas assembly:             $100
  4.  Chrome bolt assy:     $150
  5.  Shaw 20” bbl:              $250
  6.  ClarkCarbon HG:        $100
  7.  Upper receiver:          $100
  8.  Miculek Comp:            $40
  9.  Millet LRS-1 optic:     $400
  10. YHM scope riser:         $30
  11. Caldwellswiv bipod:    $40
  12. Magpul mag:                   $18
  13. Ergo Grip:                        $20
  14. A2 stock and buffer:    $75

Grand Total:                             $1,468 !!!

So there you have it, proof that you certainly do NOT have to spend big bucks to have an accurate, dependable, and most importantly FUN TO SHOOT rifle for even median ranges out to 500-600 yards. Oh, also please notice in the pic of the test target, this is .62 grain lacquer coated golden bear – just to prove a point. J

See you at the range or in a match and safe shooting until next time.
