Gemini Technologies, better known as Gemtech, produces some of the most well known and innovative suppressors in the market today. The GMT-HALO features a unique mounting system utilizing a collar that fits over a standard A2 flash hider.
The GMT-HALO specifications are impressive. This titanium suppressor weighs in at a skinny 12.2 ounces. At 7.2 inches it is the shortest HALO yet. Diameter is the same 1.5 inches found on most centerfire silencers. The can is rated for Full Auto 5.56 with a minimum barrel length of 10.3 inches.
Life expectancy exceeds 25,000 rounds.
Gemtech claims a sound reduction of 29db. Comparison to other Gemtech 5.56 suppressors:
- Integra: 26db
- Patrolman: 29db
- Trek: 29db
- Shield: 32db
- Previous HALO: 30db
This is not a Quick Detach system. What the HALO does allow is for you to run your standard A2 birdcage flash hider at all times and simply attach the HALO when needed. You don’t have to first remove the flash hider and mount a proprietary mounting system. Many shooters are negligent about re-installing the thread protectors when removing a suppressor. This system resolves that concern because you never remove the A2 flash hider. It will also fit the Primary Weapon Systems KAC556.
It is essential that the flash hider is in perfect alignment to the bore. Otherwise, when the HALO is mounted to the A2 flash hider you risk baffle strikes. Lock washers and crush washers must not be used behind the flash hider because they cause a slight tilt to the flash hider. Gemtech makes this clear:
In the field, the GMT-HALO is easy to mount. I don’t have a pro quality db meter but the claimed sound reduction seems about right. Truthfully, I’m hard pressed to notice the difference between most quality suppressors during a typical range day. The decision as to which 5.56 suppressor to buy really comes down to intended purpose, potential round count, durability, mounting system preference, length, weight, reputation of the manufacturer, and perceived value.
The HALO mounting system is not my favorite – a bit clunky – but I would probably feel differently if I was already running A2 flash hiders on everything. It certainly is innovative design. One thing I do like about it is that there really isn’t anything to go wrong unlike some of the QD systems.
Gemtech is legit. Always a favorite stop during SHOT Show.
Gemtech MSRP $995. Check the Silencer Shop for current street price.
