Anyone who runs a suppressed semi-automatic gun like an AR-15 knows just how dirty the chamber gets.  Filthy, in fact.  A suppressor works by slowing down the gas through a series of internal baffles.  The slower the gas is released the quieter the perceived sound.  However, this tends to raise the pressure levels and force more of the dirty gas – containing unburned powder, dirt, oil, and carbon – back into the chamber.  An adjustable gas block certainly helps but there is no way getting around it – a suppressed gun is a dirty gun.  And few us like to clean guns especially if you have to clean or lube during a range session or match.

Although there isn’t much you can do to reduce the amount of gunk in the chamber you can make cleaning easier through the use of parts coated with a special slick, non-stick coating such as Nickel Boron or Titanium Nitride.  I chose the FailZero EXO Nickel Boron Bolt Carrier Group for my new super-lightweight 5.56 build.

FailZero claims their EXO Nickel Boron permanently bonds to the treated product – it will not simply wear off.  The EXO coating should last the lifetime of the bolt carrier group.  EXO Nickel Boron is slick, reduces friction, and is corrosion resistant.  So how does the FailZero EXO bolt carrier group perform in the real world?

Wonderfully.  I have run a variety of ammo – some match-grade, some surplus – through my custom AR-15 with zero problems.  No malfunctions.  Suppressor mounted is a Crux Nemesis 30 titanium can.  As expected, the chamber gets absolutely filthy after more than a hundred rounds.  The beauty of the FailZero BCG?  It wipes clean with a shop towel!  I do use a cotton swab to clean into the bolt face but otherwise the grime simply wipes off.

The FailZero BCG comes fully assembled and is a drop-in upgrade everyone should consider.  It is reasonably priced and any novice can easily install one in minutes.  If you run suppressed and/or high volume it is a no-brainer upgrade to your AR-15.
