Burris Tac30 1-4x review

I picked up the Burris Tac30 1-4x scope for shooting 3-gun matches. I was previously using an EOTech with a 3x magnifier, and while the short-range capabilities of this scope are exceptional, at longer ranges it just wasn’t up to the task. The biggest problem was getting consistent holdover with the EOTech reticle. The BDC reticle of the Burris is a tremendous improvement in this regard.

I chose the Burris because over several higher priced offerings because I have very little experience with high quality optics, and was unsure of my ability to evaluate the differences in the higher priced, more heavily featured scopes from Vortex, SWFA, Leupold, etc. I was able to get this scope for $250 from MidwayUSA using an email coupon. I have this scope mounted on a 20″ Clark Custom Gator AR15, using the Burris P.E.P.R mount.

This scope is nice and bright, and the black reticle is easily seen during bright sunlight, even without the illumination turned on. With illumination on, the reticle turns red and is also easily seen in bright sunlight. At night the lowest brightness setting is more than adequate. This is a second focal plane scope, and the reticle stays the same size regardless of magnification setting. Ranging must be done at maximum magnification.

Cons:

1. The illumination on this scope is turned on with a push-button on the left side, and this button also adjusts the brightness of the reticle. It works, but could be improved. You must cycle all the way to the highest or lowest setting before going back towards the other end of the brightness scale. I prefer the knob style switch like the one found on the Super Sniper 1-4x.

2. The magnification level is adjusted by turning the entire eyepiece, not just a ring forward of the eyepiece. This poses a bit of a challenge when using Butler Creek flip-up scope covers, because the scope cover turns with the eyepiece when changing magnification, and depending on that type of weapon you are using, this could cause a problem. On my rifle the scope cover interferes with the charging handle. I will most likely remove the flip-up covers and use the elastic band cover that came with the scope.

Overall this is a great scope for the money. The reticle is clear and easy to use, and the illumination is bright and easy to see. If you are just getting into 3-gun or carbine matches but don’t have the budget for a Razor or Super Sniper, this is the ticket. Point blank target transition is excellent with a wide field of view, and long-range accuracy can be achieved as well. The downsides are minor and only require minor adjustment to get accustomed to.

I actually see your con #2 as a pro. If you prefer not to run a cat tail on the mag ring, being able to grab the entire eyepiece and turn it gives you more surface area to grab and turn.

I’ll never use another set of butler creeks again. I’m using bikini covers and either zip tying them to the tube or lashing it with a piece of 550 cord.
